Child neglect: Hunt for mother begins

Police hunt mother who left her children naked.

The Bekkersdal Police are hunting down a 33-year-old woman who left her two children aged 8 and 2 naked with her mentally ill mother.

The matter was only reported to the Bekkersdal Police in November last year but the mother has been missing since August. She was last seen in the Silvercity section of Bekkersdal.

The matter was brought to the attention of the Bekkersdal Police after members of the community contacted the police, telling them of the elderly woman roaming around the area with two naked children.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the grandmother was taken to a local hospital for treatment and has since been admitted.

The children have subsequently been taken to a place of safety.

“Child neglect is an offence punishable by law, therefore every case will be treated as serious and I will ensure that perpetrators are brought to book and punished,” said Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu, the Bekkersdal Police station commander.

Police are now urging anyone with any information that will reveal the whereabouts of the children’s mother to report it to police immediately.

Information can be reported to the Carletonville Family Violence, Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) on 011 753 4062 or on 082 778 9048, or alternatively, to the Investigating Officer, Constable Mxolisi Mlambo on 063 072 3356.
