Municipality warns about illegal electricity connections

Planned illegal electricity connections will have a negative impact on the supply of electricity to some residents, says municipality.

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) released a statement on Monday, warning the public about illegally connecting electricity, specifically in the Zenzele informal settlement area.

According to Tshidiso Thlaripe, spokesperson for the Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo, “We have noted with displeasure, efforts from a certain section of the Zenzele community illegally connecting electricity.

“Our main concerns are that illegal connections are dangerous and often result in serious injury or death. It also causes overloading of the network, which affects the smooth operating of the traffic lights, high-mast lights as well as sustaining equipment at clinics. We are encouraging members of the Zenzele community to abstain from engaging in conduct that breaks the laws of this country,” Thlaripe said.

Should the community continue with the planned illegal electricity connection, the municipality will apply for all laws to be enforced in an effort to curb the pending action, he added.

“Importantly, be aware that the planned illegal connection will have a negative impact on the supply of electricity to residents of Mohlakeng. We are prepared to work with all stakeholders and share the vision we carry for Rand West City residents, but we are discouraging acts of anarchy in an effort to draw us to the negotiation table,” Thlaripe said.
