Local outruns Kenyan

Local boy Kabelo Melamu proved to be too much for the usual long distance achiever, a Kenyan, on home turf in Randfontein.

Despite not being able to win the debut Colossus Joseph Mabodla Challenge 10km Night Race at the Greenhills Stadium on New Year’s Eve, local boy Kabelo Melamu can pride himself on finishing second and ahead of a Kenyan international on home soil.

Kabelo, the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Junior Athlete of the Year, running in colours of KMPG, made his intentions clear by leading all the way only to be beaten by Jamba Nkedo from Ubuhle Athletics Club in a time of 32 minutes and 49 seconds.

Kabelo had to be happy with second spot and overall first junior to cross the finish line in a time of 32 minutes and 59 seconds. Cornelius Lagat from Kenya was third in 33 minutes and 6 seconds.

In the women’s section, Oneile Dintoe, a Botswanan athlete, who regards Mohlakeng and Randfontein as her second home, placed first in a time of 36 minutes and 52 seconds. When not in Botswana, Oneile, also a Nedbank athlete, spends most of her time in Mohlakeng training local young boys and girls.

Local top athlete Cornelia Joubert from Boxer placed second in a time of 36 minutes and 54 seconds.

Top three men finishers are from Cornelius Lagat (3rd), Jamba Nkedo (winner) and Kabelo Melamu (2nd).

“The results just prove that Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes are not undefeatable. A good strategy and tactics along with hard work shows they can be beaten,” said Motlatsi Sesing, Kabelo Melamu’s trainer/ coach.
