Driver and passenger arrested after lying about hijacking

Two men face perjury charges after lying to cops about hijacking.

Two men aged 27 and 36 were arrested for perjury following a false statement given to the police.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the incident centres on a driver allegedly being hijacked on the N12 on 5 January, 2017.

The investigating officer discovered that the car was not on the N12 on 5 January, but rather five days later on 10 January at 10.10am.

Both the driver and his passenger were arrested and charged with perjury and are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.

“This should be a wake-up call to persons who open false cases. We will not tolerate this practice and anyone who makes a false statement under oath should be aware of the consequences thereof,” said Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu, station commander of the Bekkersdal Police.
