Bound, beaten and killed: Third on scene speaks out

'To prevent him from choking on his own blood, we turned him on his side'

One of the first responders to a scene in Ten Acres where a man was recently brutally beaten and later died has spoken out about the incident.

Pottie Potgieter, a Mapogo reaction officer, said he was notified of the incident shortly after it happened and was third on scene – before police or paramedics.

He explained that when he saw the man lying on the side of the road, his face had been badly beaten and was tied with what seemed to be electric fence wiring. He added that the man had rope tied around his upper body, which he suspects was how the murderers moved him, bearing in mind that the victim was quite big.

“He started coughing up blood and from experience, I knew that could mean he had a punctured lung. To prevent him from choking on his own blood, we turned him on his side, but he turned back,” Potgieter said.

Paramedics and police arrived shortly after Potgieter, and the man was treated on scene.

Netcare 911 confirmed the man had multiple injuries which were treated on scene. Due to the extent of his wounds, the intention was to airlift him to hospital, but unfortunately he died shortly after the helicopter arrived.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, the man was identified on scene as a resident of Soweto. At the time of writing this article, the Herald has not been able to confirm whether the man’s family or next of kin have been notified of his death.

The Randfontein Police are are now searching for any information that might assist in their investigation. Those with information are urged to contact Warrant Officer Rupert van Zyl, on 011 278 8100.
