On Monday, 9 January, Randfontein Police captured the young man accused of shooting and killing a 31-year-old man at a tavern in Lemeko Street, Mohlakeng last year.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, a 31-year-old man was murdered at about 11.30pm on Saturday, 12 November 2016 in Mohlakeng.

It is alleged a fight between the victim and the suspect resulted in the victim’s death. The suspect then fled the scene.

“On Saturday, 7 January, Constable Masaole from the Randfontein Detectives received information about the whereabouts of the suspect in this murder case,” Ernst said.

Constable Masaole followed up and upon confirming the information, he arranged with uniformed police members to assist him. The members from the Randfontein reaction group as well as Constable Masaole successfully arrested the suspect and were able to confiscate an unlicensed firearm from him during the arrest.

The suspect will be charged with murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court soon.

The Randfontein Police station commander, Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, expressed his appreciation towards the community and the police members for the arrest.

“Our community took it upon themselves to gather information which assisted the police in the end. Police officers acted swiftly and it yielded positive results. Another illegal firearm is taken off the streets,” Brigadier Manamela said.
