What are your options after matric?

You've been so busy with matric, you forgot there's a world beyond it. Here are your options ...

The matric results are out and in your procrastination, you’ve missed university and collage application deadlines … What now?

It’s not the end of the world, there are many other options to look into while trying to figure the situation out.

• Compile a Curriculum Vitae (CV)

The first step and most important step of going into the adult world is to know what your skills are and to keep a portfolio of everything you’ve achieved to date.

• Jump into the job market

Your first job will not always be your best job but now is the time in your life where you need to gain some form of independence and a large part of that in the capitalist world is to make money.

• A job is a job is a job

Forget about earning a top salary after matric, you need to start somewhere and work your way up. Au pairing, house sitting, pet sitting and tutoring are ways to make easy money and a way to network.

• Further your studies

Even if you missed an application or admissions deadline, there are universities and collages who do mid-year applications.

• Start a small business

You’re never to young to be an entrepreneur. It doesn’t have to be big but it can be a way to make money. Buying and selling goods online are just one of the many examples of how to test the waters while making money.

• Internships

There are various companies who take on interns and this is mostly unpaid and while it is pumping money into something without getting an immediate return, you can learn skills and get your foot in the door of a company. Who knows? They might train you up and offer you a position.

• Take a gap year

You’re not sure what you want to do with your life and that’s OK, you need time to figure it out. Travel is the best way to do that – if it’s affordable – and not all travel is overseas; South Africa has much to offer.
