Randfontein Police have issued a warning to bank ATM users.
This after that they are again inundated with reports of ATM thefts.
Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson says in one incident, a 73-year-old woman was ‘assisted’ by an unknown man in Randgate. When the card did not return from the ATM she blocked the card. It was only then that she realised a large amount of money was already withdrawn from her account at another ATM in town.
The investigating officer of these type of crimes, warrant officer Karlien Coombe is concerned that clients using ATMs in Randfontein are targeted again.
She has the following advice:
• Don’t trust anyone;
• If the bank card is stuck or does not go into the ATM smoothly, it most probably means that the ATM has been tampered with so do not enter your pin number;
• Remove the bank card immediately and walk away from the ATM;
• Don’t accept any assistance from any person, whether you know them or not;
• If someone interferes while you are busy with your banking, make a noise in order to attract attention;
• If the ‘helpful assistant’ start pressing buttons, make sure that you personally remove your bank card and see immediately that it is your card. These
criminals are sleight of hand and can swap cards in seconds.
The Police calls on the help of the community members to assist them with information. Anyone with information can contact the Crime
Stop number – 08600 10111 or SMS Crime Line – 32211 to report crime anonymously.
