Monkey on the loose!

First monkey spotted roaming in Randfontein for 2017.

At about 1pm on Thursday, 5 January the Herald was informed that a monkey was sitting in front of a local business on Homestead Avenue in Homelake.

Since there has been various reports about monkeys being spotted in residential areas in Randfontein last year, the Herald immediately rushed off to meet the little primate.

An article was also written in 2016 about another monkey that was spotted in a resident’s home.

The woman from RNR Auto’s five-year-old daughter, Rinaaz Dabhelia, first spotted the monkey sitting quietly right in front of their business. On arrival, the Herald immediately started searching for the monkey. One of the owners said it had just crossed the street, and was sitting in a tree across from their business.

Rinaaz Dabhelia, 5, who spotted the blue monkey.

It took a while to find the visitor, but with the help of Ocean Basket’s staff it was eventually spotted sitting high up in the tree, not moving at first. After a while it jumped to the next tree. The monkey eventually moved onto a resident’s property and disappeared without a trace.

The owner of RNR Auto also assisted by calling an expert, who identified it as a blue monkey. “The expert advised me that the monkey can get very violent, once cornered,” he said.

The continued presence of monkeys in Randfontein remains a mystery …
