Matric class of 2016 makes history

The class of 2016 achieved a pass rate of 72,5 per cent which is 1,8 per cent higher than the 2015 pass rate.

The South African 2016 matric pass rate has been announced and Angie Motshekga, Minister of Basic Education is pleased with the improvement.

Motshekga announced the matric pass rate late on Wednesday afternoon. In her address she announced that the class of 2016 achieved a pass rate of 72,5 per cent, which is 1,8 per cent higher than last year.

The Free State is the top performing province with a pass rate of 93,2 per cent. This is a 5,5 per cent increase on the 87,7 per cent 2015 pass rate. Motshekga said the Free State was the only province to break the 90 per cent pass rate barrier.

The Western Cape was the second best performing province with a 87,7 per cent pass rate, which is 0,3 per cent lower than the 88 per cent 2015 pass rate.

Gauteng came in third with a pass rate of 87 per cent, which is 1,1 per cent higher than the 85,9 per cent 2015 pass rate.

Pass rate by province:

• Eastern Cape — 63,3 per cent (an increase of 1,1 per cent from 62,2 per cent in 2015)

• Limpopo — 68,2 per cent (a decline of 3,5 per cent from 71,7 per cent in 2015)

• KwaZulu-Natal — 69,5 per cent (an increase of 7,9 per cent from 61,6 per cent in 2015)

• Mpumalanga — 81,3 per cent (a decline of 0,8 per cent from 82,1 per cent in 2015)

• Northern Cape — 82,2 per cent (a decline of 1,8 per cent from 84 per cent in 2015)

• North West — 86,2 per cent (an increase of 9 per cent from 77,2 per cent in 2015)

This is not the only good news for this year’s overall matric results; the class of 2016 has seen the highest enrolment figure for Grade 12 in the history of the basic education system in South Africa.

Last year 828 020 learners registered for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) of which 674 652 were full-time and 153 368 were part-time learners. However, only 610 178 full-time learners and 107 793 part-time learners wrote the NSC examinations.
