Thieves nailed by off-duty cops

Off-duty cops standing on a street corner nail three alleged thieves in action.

Just days before Christmas two off-duty police officers caught three thieves trying to steal from a delivery truck.

The incident took place on 23 December in Bekkersdal, said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

The two officers, Sergeant Mike Poonyane and Constable John Shoai were standing on a street corner when they noticed three men opening a stationary delivery truck.

After a while, the officers saw the men removing something from the back of the truck, loading it into another vehicle and speeding off.

The officers then alerted the truck driver and chased after the alleged thieves. The called for assistance from on-duty officers Constable Stanley Lavhelani and Constable Piet Mofokeng.

“Due to the attentive officers and their swift reaction the police officers managed to apprehend the suspects on the R28 road,” said Lefakane.

The thieves whose ages range between 36 and 44 made a brief appearance in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on 28 December. They are expected back in court soon for a bail application.

“If it were not for them, the suspects would have gotten away with a large sum of money. Business owners are also advised to improve their security measures when their money is collected,” said Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu, station commander of the Bekkersdal Police.
