Cops at the receiving end of a bullet storm

Randfontein and Bekkersdal Police were caught in a hail of bullets while in a high-speed car chase.

Police officers from Randfontein and Bekkersdal were caught in a hail of bullets during a high-speed car chase.

On 2 December officers from both stations received information regarding a vehicle that was hijacked in Bekkersdal was being driven towards Mohlakeng.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, the Randfontein officers went out to towards the R28/ R559 crossing to apprehend the suspects. Upon arrival they were informed that the vehicle had already entered Mohlakeng through a different entrance.

They spotted the vehicle but its occupants realised that the police were hot on their heels. The driver reversed and sped off in a different direction to escape the police.

Police immediately pursued the suspects but were met by live rounds being fired at them. When the police returned fire the driver of the alleged hijacked vehicle lost control of it and it veered off into the veld.

The occupants jumped out and fled in different directions while still shooting at the police officers. Police property was damaged but no officer was hit,” Ernst said.

The Randfontein Police are now investigating a case of attempted murder.
