Rainbow Daycare spoiled rotten

Village Square Mall shows its soft side.

Village Square Mall celebrated an early Christmas with a local haven for disabled children, and had them smiling from ear to ear.

The mall took it upon themselves to throw Rainbow Daycare Centre a Christmas party with balloons, good food, gifts and of course, Father Christmas himself.

The centre is currently struggling with transport after their bus’ engine seized and the Herald had to jump in to collect some of the children for their big day out. Staff members from the mall as well as passers-by stepped in as well, to make the day as special as possible for the learners.

The party took place on Wednesday, 7 December at Nando’s in the mall, where the entire care centre had an early lunch, compliments of Nando’s.

For some of the learners, the experience was something new.

In addition to the lunch, the centre’s learners were treated to gifts sponsored by PEP Stores, Edgars and FotoFirst.

PEP made sure to cater for party decorations and gifts for the learners, Edgars sponsored gifts for the caregivers and FotoFirst had every learner take photos with the Father Christmas they ‘flew in from the North Pole.’

Under the beard and red Christmas suit was Lappies Labuschagne, 71-year-old man who was previously on the Herald’s front page after his bakkie or in this case, his sleigh was stolen.

Regardless of his misfortune, he took the time to give back to the care centre learners to give them a proper Christmas.

Other than orchestrating the entire event, the mall showed its soft side and wrote individual Christmas cards out to every one of the care centre’s learners.

Michelle Papastefanou, Village Square Mall Marketing Manager, said the mall is looking forward to working more with the community to make a difference and said this is just the tip of the iceberg for them.
