Girl, 9, helps catch burglar

A nine-year-old girl assisted in catching and putting a housebreaker behind bars.

A nine-year-old girl has assisted in catching and putting a notorious young housebreaker behind bars.

Nkosinathi Maphumolo, 25, also known as Jomo, was found guilty and was sentenced to three years imprisonment for housebreaking and theft.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the incident took place on 30 November, 2014 in Bekkersdal.

Lefakane said the victim left her home to go to town and when she came back, she found her home broken into. Her laptop, tablet, electrical appliances and bedding were missing.

In a panic she went looking for her help and a nine-year-old girl came to her rescue. The little girl allegedly told the victim she saw who broke into the house and knew where he was living.

After investigating, detective Warrant Officer Bernard Makgato discovered all of the stolen property at Maphumolo’s home, and arrested him.

“The information given was followed up, and on 10 December, 2014 Maphumolo was apprehended,” Lefakane said.

Maphumolo was sentenced to three years’ direct imprisonment in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on 22 November, 2016.

“This must serve as an eye-opener to members of the community who withhold information from the police. They must refrain from this practice. Fighting crime begins with me,” said Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu, the station commander at Bekkersdal, said.
