Paramedic shooting victim identified

The shooter has since been put behind bars.

Justice has finally been achieved for an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) shift leader who was shot on duty last year.

Bulelwa Nhlapo, a 57-year-old EMS member at the Bekkersdal West Clinic was shot while on duty in March last year.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the motivation for the incident was robbery as the suspects involved first robbed security personnel before moving on to the EMS.

According to Sandile Gwayi, West Rand District Health Principal Communication Officer at the time, two men entered the clinic base. They then tried to open the locked door of a cabin from which the EMS personnel were operating.

He continued, saying that the shift leader unlocked and slightly opened the door to ask what the men wanted while also attempting to keep them out.

After an exchange of words and call logging, which seemed to be the men pretending to have an emergency, they forced the door open. One of the men, Velile Koyana, then fired a shot shot which hit Nhlapo in the knee.

The men later fled the scene and Nhlapo was assisted at the base and later transported to the Leratong Hospital.

Police investigated and later found Koyana in possession of the same goods he stole from the security personnel as well as the firearm used to shoot Nhlapo.

After a lengthy investigation led by Warrant Officer Bernard Makgato, Koyana was found guilty and was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court.

The District management condemns such acts and appeals to community members not to attack health personnel as they are there to assist the community,” Gwayi said.
