The elderly man who was one of two people seriously injured in a two-vehicle car crash involving a bakkie and taxi on Saturday, 3 December, has died.
The 63-year-old man was transported to Leratong Hospital after emergency services used the Jaws of Life to rescue him from his bakkie. The elderly woman who was travelling with him was transported by ER24 to Leratong Hospital while he was being cut free from the bakkie.
On Monday, 5 December, the Herald was advised he had succumbed to his injuries in hospital, however, the exact time and date of his passing is not known.
An eyewitness of the accident and close friend of the elderly couple, who does not want to be named, told the Herald on Monday,
“I am on my way to Krugersdorp to meet the family. At this stage I do not have any information and I also want to respect the family’s time of mourning.”
At this stage, the Herald can’t confirm the condition of the elderly woman.
The two-vehicle crash involving the bakkie and a taxi happened on the corner of Lazaar Avenue and Horingbek Street in Helikon Park.
According to the same friend, “The taxi was speeding down Homestead Avenue and we were coming from Lazaar Avenue. At the robot, we were turning right into Horingbek Street when the robot turned red. The taxi driver jumped the red light and collided with my friends, who were turning into Horingbek Street.”
It has been said that the injured occupants of the taxi were lying all over the road. According to a reliable source, there were 10 to 12 occupants in the taxi. They were all taken to hospital.
On scene to assist the injured were ER24, Netcare 911, the Sector 4 Community Policing Forum, the Randfontein Traffic Police as well as various residents and tow-trucking companies.
