Teen arrested for R180 000 crime

A teenager was found guilty of committing theft to the tune of R180 000, and a 37-year-old male housebreaker was also sentenced to imprisonment, as a result of the efforts of just one policewoman.

One Randfontein police officer recently had major successes in two cases she had been assigned to investigate.

Constable Tsakani Mathonsi from the Randfontein Police has managed to secure two successful convictions, both for housebreaking.

The first of the suspects, a 37-year-old man, was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment following a February housebreaking in Greenhills.

The accused was the gardener at the home he broke into. He was allegedly left in the garden while the homeowner ran errands. Upon her return, she discovered that firearms and other property had been stolen from the house. Mathonsi investigated and found the suspect in Bekkersdal, and also recovered two firearms which the suspect was selling.

The second of Mathonsi’s cases involved a 19-year-old teenager named Paul Galo who was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment following a housebreaking, also in Greenhills, which occurred in March this year.

The accused stole household goods and a vehicle to the value of R180 000. The teen was later arrested and after an intensive investigation by Mathonsi, he was linked to another housebreaking which occurred in March last year in Randgate.

The teen’s modus operandi was to break a window and take household goods, electronics and clothing. The accused was found guilty on 15 November and was sentenced to his prison term on 22 November.

Mathonsi has since been showered with praise by the Randfontein Police management. Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela is highly impressed with her investigative skills and congratulated her on her successes.

“Criminals are not welcome, and these sentences prove that criminal activity will be punished,” Manamela said.
