Hitchhiker held at gunpoint and robbed

When other transport is available, refrain from hitchhiking.

Three robbers held a 35-year-old hitchhiker at gunpoint recently.

The incident took place on 15 November at approximately 9.10am on the R559, Captain Appel Ernst from the Randfontein Police said.

The victim was allegedly waiting for a lift when a silver VW Polo with an unknown number plate stopped next to him.

One of the three occupants pointed a firearm at the victim, searched him and took his money.

The Randfontein Police have issued various warnings over the last few months regarding the dangers of hitchhiking and call on the community to be vigilant.

“When other transport is available, refrain from hitchhiking. Do not carry large amounts of money with you when you travel and be careful whom you trust,” Ernst said.
