R’fontein stands together in the fight against cancer

Yet another successful Cansa Relay held in R'fontein.

Randfontein has once again taken to walking through the night to support cancer patients in the 2016 Cansa Relay for Life.

This year’s relay took place on Friday, 4 November on Laerskool Randfontein’s (Ram) sports grounds. The event is used to raise funds for the Cansa Association and create awareness about cancer.

Before the relay began, a number of bikers took to the field to ride a symbolic lap. Once they finished the lap, they released balloons into the air.

The relay started with the cancer survivor lap, and those young and old who have come out on top in the fight against cancer took off. This lap opened up the track for supporters of those with cancer.

The participants had an array of entertainment, food and awareness campaigns to keep them going through the long night of walking.

Marelette Grové and Pitso Moahlodi helped make this year’s Cansa Relay for Life possible.

The relay had participants from all walks of life, including folks from the Connie Mulder Centre and representatives of various political parties.

No Cansa Relay is complete without a Luminaria Ceremony which is held to honour and remember those lost to cancer.

During the ceremony, the stadium lights are switched off and those who have lost loved ones to cancer get a chance to reflect on and remember those who have passed and to think about those who are still fighting the good fight.

Denver Ramnarian from Quick Response Service (QRS) with Linda Steyn, this year’s Cansa Relay for Life organiser.

Linda Steyn, this year’s organiser, said this was the first time she had organised such an event, and was astounded at the amount of support she received from the others on board.

She said she had thought the event would be small, but to her surprise, the community of Randfontein stood together in the fight against cancer.
