Mapogo security officer critical after shooting

Mapogo officer shot twice during shooting in Helikon Park.

One of Mapogo Security’s very own was shot and critically injured in Helikon Park after responding to a panic alarm set off during a break-in on Friday (4 November).

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson confirmed the shooting that took place on Kiewiet Street.

She added the incident was as a result of a car-jacking.

At approximately 8.15pm, a 55-year-old resident got home in his Jeep Grand Cherokee which was black in colour with the registration of DF41TCGP.

When the man entered his premises through his electric gate, five other men entered with him.

The man was almost immediately held at gunpoint while the men demanded his car’s keys and took his cellphone as well before tying him up with cable ties.

The premises’ alarm was activated and the five suspects hid themselves in the yard in fear of being caught.

It is at this point when a security officer from Mapogo Security responded to the alarm and upon arrival he was shot twice – once in the shoulder and once in the thigh.

The suspect managed to flee with the 55-year-old man’s Jeep as well as a white Toyota Hilux double cab bakkie in which they allegedly arrived. According to Ernst, there was a substantial amount of money in the Jeep.

Once the suspects left the scene, the security officer was stabilised on scene but was rushed to hospital via the Netcare1 helicopter.

Quick Response Service (QRS) said the officer was critically injured as a result of the incident subsequently they had to begin advanced life support before he was airlifted.

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Station Commander expressed his concern with the brutality of the crime and said, “The West Rand Trio Task Team is working tirelessly to tract the suspects. The injured security officer and his family are in our prayers.”
