Department of Social Development joins hands with the police

'If the community will work with us, we will win the battle against crime'

The Gauteng Department of Social Development recently held a social crime prevention awareness campaign on the West Rand.

The campaign was held on Thursday, 27 October at the Khutsong Community Hall. The purpose of the campaign was to ensure the safety of at least one area within the West Rand. The campaign was targeted at West Rand youth.

Kgomotso Kalane, a social worker from the Khutsong Social Development office, encouraged parents to report any criminal activities, including petty theft of as little as R2, as some youths steal to support their drug habits.

She said Khutsong can be a better place if communities work together.

Social Development is not the only department ready to tackle social crime – the Khutsong Police stand four-square behind the effort to make the West Rand a safer place.

“We have different units within our police station. The first unit is [the] Community Service Centre where community members are served whenever they encounter challenges.

We also have crime prevention units responsible for patrolling around the area and the detective unit which is responsible for investigating crimes,” said Captain Eddie Boboko from the Khutsong Police.

He added, “Gangsterism and drugs are somewhat related.

“The Department of Social Development and Police always strive to fight crime. If the community will work with us, we will win the battle against crime.”
