Cash in transit heist in CBD

A female pedestrian was wounded in the leg during the shootout – Captain Appel Ernst

Yesterday (3 November), at approximately 5pm, a group of robbers targeted a cash in transit vehicle, while it was collecting cash in the Randfontein CBD.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, it is alleged that the two guards received the cash at Best Buy Wholesalers. As they left the shop, they allegedly were physically attacked.

“When the one guard was grabbed, shot in the leg and disarmed, the shop owner realised that a robbery was in progress,” said Ernst.

She continued by saying that a shootout ensued when the shopkeeper and G4 personnel retaliated. During the shootout a second G4S guard was hit by a bullet and a female pedestrian was wounded in the leg.

The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. They allegedly drove away in a black BMW and a white Volkswagen Golf.

The injured were treated on the scene and transported to local hospitals.

The Randfontein Police Station commander, Brigadier Manamela expressed his concern and dismay with this incident. “It is unfortunate that innocent people were injured. We pray for their speedy recovery. No stone will be left unturned to trace and ultimately arrest the robbers.”
