Large retail store robbed of R250k

Police investigating massive R250 000 business robbery at retail store in CBD.

The Randfontein Police are investigating a case of business robbery after a group of about six to eight men robbed Clicks of goods worth an estimated R250 000 in Village Square Mall in Randfontein’s Central Business District (CBD) one Sunday last month.

Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, confirmed that the front door of the retail store was found broken on the morning of 16 October.

The incident was caught on camera and Ernst said the footage shows that approximately six to eight men entered the entrance facing Main Reef Road.

Ernst went on to say that the burglars forced entry into Clicks and took goods worth approximately R250 000, mainly expensive perfumes for men and women.

The burglars then fled in a vehicle after committing the crime.

The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Thabiso Duiker is urgently requesting any information regarding the incident. He can be contacted on 011 278 8100 or anonymously on the Police Crime Line on 08600 10 111.

Francois du Buisson, Centre Manager of Village Square Shopping Centre says, “The break-in at Clicks is being investigated by the SAPS. We can confirm it took place in under 4 minutes, in the early morning just after 5.30am, when the mall was closed to shoppers. It was captured on CCTV and this footage has been provided to the SAPS. As the incident is under investigation by the SAPS, I suggest that any further information is clarified by them.

“However, I would like to stress that at Village Square Mall, we are not prepared to sit back and say an increase in crime at this time of year is a problem throughout the country and therefore there is little we can do. We believe that a single crime at our mall is one crime too many. We are dedicated to ensure the security of our mall at all times and have intensified our security measures, such as CCTV.

“We are committed to being part of the solution to crime in our community and work closely with the SAPS for crime prevention, both on a local level and through our strong relationship with Business Against Crime.”
