Get to know a Teiner #4 – Thembelani Jojo

Fourth person in the Herald's Get to know a Randfonteiner project introduces himself.

This week’s Randfonteiner is younger than the Randfonteiners before him.

Thembelani Bonga Jojo is a 17-year-old who has lived in Randgate for the past eight years.

Thembelani’s nicknames are Jojo and Yankies, depending on who he’s talking to. When asked how people came to know him as Yankies he said he’s named after the popular fast food chain he loves to eat at.

His other nickname, Jojo, came about at the Randgate Boxing Club of which he is a member. The name stuck because it is easier to pronounce than getting into a tongue twister with his name. In fact, he is known as Big Jojo, to avoid confusion with his younger brother, another boxer for the club, who is called Little Jojo.

Thembelani is currently a Grade 11 learner at the Ahmed Timol school in Azaadville. He’s planning to go to the University of Johannesburg (UJ) or the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in 2018 when his done with school.

While Thembelani has the physique of an athlete, he has the brain of an advocate and said he plans to study law after school.

When asked how he knows he’s in Randfontein, Thembelani, who is still too young to drive, said, “The potholes are a clear indication you’re in town”.
