When the Herald was on scene on Friday, taxi owners had apparently had a meeting in an attempt to resolve the conflict among themselves; however, once the meeting ended, the atmosphere remained tense.

Police later engaged in talks with taxi drivers and owners in order to prevent further unrest.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, at approximately 9am that day, before the Herald arrived on scene, two people were shot, escaping with their lives, during the morning’s chaos.

Ernst said the two victims were discovered by police after they heard gunshots at the taxi rank while on patrol. She said one of the victims sustained a leg wound and the other an arm wound. Both were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Ernst explained witnesses claimed the shots were fired randomly and that the shots were related to taxi violence.

“The police are investigating all the allegations,” Ernst said. She further confirmed that a case of attempted murder is being investigated.
