The West Rand Trio Task Team has arrested a 57-year-old man for being in possession of what seems to be a small weapons cache.
Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, said the man was arrested on Friday, 28 October, at approximately 8am in Hillside, Randfontein.
Members of the task team were following up on information about allegedly illegal firearms and ammunition.
When the team arrived at the man’s home, they found nine firearms of various calibres and numerous rounds of ammunition. None of the weapons or ammunition were kept in a safe and only two weapons were licensed.
The man now faces various charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein station commander congratulated the team on the major success.
“However, we need to stress the fact that firearms that are estate property should be dealt with according to the Firearms Control Act [60 of 2000]. It is illegal to be in possession of a deceased relative’s firearm without the relevant documentation,” he explained.
