Destructive storm damages Carryou farm project

Carryou's Vleikop farming project damaged by two recent wind storms.

It has been said that what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.

Carryou Ministry is a living testament to this. The organisation has had to face a number of obstacles recently, one of which resulted in extensive damage to their Vleikop farm project. One of the tunnels on the farm was damaged by two recent wind storms.

For some this would have been the end but despite the odds being stacked against them, the team lead by Stephen Ngakane have continued to produce enough food to supply all of Carryou’s feeding programmes. They have even managed to produce a surplus that was given to needy families in the community.

“We produced record quantities of vegetables like spinach, tomatoes and beetroot. When it comes to feeding children, you cannot allow anything to get in the way,” Stephen said.

While they have managed some success even after the two storms, the cost to repair the tunnels will cost thousands and Carryou does not have that kind of funding available.

“We will also have to wait until the end of the growing season. Because repairs will entail removing the netting that forms the walls and roof of the structure, leaving the crops inside vulnerable to the attention of neighbouring cattle and goats,” Stephen explained.

Carryou’s current situation makes for a difficult one but even still Stephen said, “The need for the food we produce remains. We cannot let anything get in the way.”
