Danger lurks at graveyard

People can become sitting ducks for robbers and thieves at local graveyard.

The Randfontein Cemetery has come into the spotlight – yet again.

This time it is not because of its apparently usual unkempt state, but for its fencing, which poses a danger to those who visit the graves, making them sitting ducks for robbers and thieves. There have been many incidents in which motorists have driven through the wall, leaving gaping holes that have never been repaired.

Peter Dick, the DA’s Ward 9 councillor, said the wall is broken in some sections, allowing anyone to walk through and do as they please in the graveyard.

“People can just walk through and steal things off the graves, especially the newer ones. People even steal flowers off the graves. There is also room for vandalism,” he said.

The section of fencing that bothers Dick the most is the part where a truck drove through it. Apparently, an insurance policy had to be paid out before the repairs could be done. It appears that the pay-out may have been made, but the damage hasn’t been rectified. He also wants to know where the money has gone, in the event that it has been paid out.

He told the Herald that he had already brought the matter up in council, in an attempt to get something done about the problem, but he has not yet received a response.
