Stop street to curb R28 deaths?

The dangerous R28 which claimed two lives of pedestrians recently has been made a bit safer.

After many lives have been lost and many complaints lodged by the surrounding communities, a stop street has finally been erected on the R28 between Randfontein and Westonaria, near Mohlakeng Extension 11.

Residents of Mohlakeng Extension 11 finally have a safer crossing to the inner Mohlakeng.

Mohlakeng Extension 11 residents have recently questioned the safety of the road and called for speed humps, a bridge or a stop street on the road near their area. These concerns were brought up during their strike on the road on 14 September.

It is unclear whether the move to erect the stop street is as a result of complaints by the community or the long history the road has with collisions. The stop street also comes shortly after two men lost their lives on 1 October close to where the stop street has been erected.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, the two male pedestrians were hit by a vehicle and died on the scene.

This is not the only incident that has occurred on the R28 – over the last two years, more than 20 incidents have been reported on by the Herald. In May, for example, one person was killed and four others were injured after a vehicle overturned on the road.

The Randfontein detectives are investigating this incident as a case of culpable homicide, and are requesting any person who might have witnessed the incident to contact them. The investigating officer, Warrant Officer Pappas Mhlongo, can be contacted on 011 278 8100.
