River of sewage sweeps down Westonaria street

'Workers are expected to resume work tomorrow'

Westonaria’s sewerage woes continue and the recent municipal strike has not helped the situation.

According to Seth Sekhokho, DA PR councillor, a river of sewage is flooding down Nelson Mandela Drive.

“Children are playing in the dirty water and it’s unhealthy. It’s not right,” he said.

Skekhokho said he reported the matter to the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) on Wednesday, 12 October and again on Thursday, 13 October but received no joy as he was told operational vehicles had been temporarily withdrawn from the Westonaria section of the RWCLM because of the current municipal strike.

Tshidiso Tlharipe, spokesperson for the RWCLM Executive Mayor, confirmed that the vehicles were currently not available, but said they will be back on the road tomorrow (14 October).

The current municipal strike is the result of a wage dispute with the municipality. The former Westonaria Local Municipality workers are upset because Randfontein municipal workers are paid more than their counterparts in Westonaria.

“The employees of the former Westonaria Local Municipality have embarked on an unprotected strike. Today the Executive Mayor met with protesters and responded to all their issues as raised. In his closing remarks, he made a commitment to look at the grievances and encouraged employees to resume their official work.

The Rand West City Local Municipality is confident that the functionality of the institution will resume and apologises to the community of Rand West City for the inconvenience caused,” Tlharipe said.

Tlharipe said workers are expected to resume work tomorrow (14 October).
