Hope on the horizon for Ethan

"I am very nervous, yet excited about the operation. I can not wait for the moment after the operation when they test his vision."

One-and-a-half-year old Ethan Sokol who was born blind, with a hearing disability and two holes in his heart will finally have eye surgery on 21 October.

The Herald previously reported that Ethan contracted congenital rubella syndrome, which caused the retina of Ethan’s left eye not to develop fully. In addition, he has a cataract in his right eye.

The surgery, comprising a cataract extraction and lens implant, will be performed by Doctor J Pauw at the Pretoria Eye Institute.

Ethan’s mother, Tatiana Sokol, 22, said, “I am very nervous, yet excited about the operation. I can not wait for the moment after the operation when they test his vision.”

Cathy van der Westhuizen, Ethan’s grandmother, said they have faith in God that all will go well.

Tatiana’s other son Kayden, who is eight months old, was also born with a hole in his heart, as the Herald previously reported.

Kayden is now doing extremely well after being discharged from the ICU in Leratong Hospital on 2 June. When the Herald arrived at the Sokol’s home, Ethan was sleeping peacefully, while Kayden was all smiles.

Tatiana and Cathy thank the community for supporting them in all ways possible.

The Sokol’s will keep the Herald posted on the outcome of Ethan’s surgery.
