Engaging with culture important to police

West Rand Cluster Police trade their uniforms for a different colour for their Heritage Day celebration.

The West Rand Cluster Police take celebrating the country’s different cultures almost as seriously as fighting crime.

They hosted their annual Heritage Day celebration on Friday 30 September at the Munsieville Stadium in Krugersdorp.

Major General Anna Mateisi, West Rand Cluster Commander and Gauteng Woman’s Network champion organised the event to ensure that the county’s different cultures are embraced, regardless of race or creed.

“This also runs through to our workplace where we must treat each other and our clients with respect,” said Constable Lucky Matome, Tarlton Police spokesperson.

“Understanding each other’s cultures enhances service delivery as we will know and understand our clients better,” Mateisi said.

Regarding the celebrations on the day, Matome said, “One would thought it was a traditional mass wedding when the West Rand Cluster made their grand entrance into the stadium, led by their cluster commander”.

Each of the clusters, including those as far as Johannesburg East, had to prepare traditional cuisine and display the chosen tradition. The clusters were judged on their presentation of the cultures.

“Judges had a very difficult time to choose the winners as all clusters were equal to the task,” Matome said. The overall winner on the day was the Tshwane Central Police Cluster, which embraced the English culture.

The West Rand Cluster would like to thank the community of Munsieville for allowing them to make use of their facilities. In addition, the local men and women in blue would like to thank their stakeholders and every individual who made the event a success, including the Men for Change Forum.
