Roadblock equipment new to R’fontein

Roadblock equipment new to R'fontein.

Mobile equipment new to Randfontein was introduced at a recent roadblock near the intersection of Main Reef and Retief Roads.

On Wednesday, 5 October, Randfontein Traffic Police collaborated with Gauteng Traffic Police in an effort to make the roads safer for its users.

During the morning, a Mobile Vehicle Testing Station (MVTS) structure was put in place with the main purpose of identifying problematic brakes among vehicles.

“This machine tests the service brakes (front and rear) as well as the emergency brake system of the vehicle.

It then calculates the precise percentage of the brakes’ capability,” explained Elsabie Johnson, the Provincial Inspector and machine operator.

The MVTS structure consists of a platform with rollers connected to a machine which calculates the brakes’ capability. Each vehicle is pulled up onto the rollers by a traffic officer and then the brakes are tested.

According to Catherine Kgokong, a Randfontein Traffic Police officer, they discontinue a vehicle and confiscate the licensing disc if too many faults are found. The driver is then urged to get the vehicle repaired before a new licence disc can be issued at the nearest Licensing Department.

Average fines ranges between R500 and R1 500 according to the brake capability percentage.

Randfontein Traffic Police trust that this joint operation will result in safer roads.
