RHS pupil wins inter-school debate competition

The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) Libraries held their annual inter-school debate and in doing so they celebrated International Literacy Day.

The debate was held just a week after Literacy Day, which was celebrated on 8 September.

The debating competition is held annually and pupils from all secondary schools in Randfontein are invited to compete. The aim of the event is to encourage reading and research among high school pupils. It also gives them the opportunity to showcase their talent, confidence and their ability to communicate.

This year’s debate topic was #Youth rethinking the next 40 years since 1976, the year the Soweto uprising took place. Nine pupils from each high school in Randfontein participated.

According to Thandeka Legae, RWCLM Programmes Librarian, participants impressed the adjudicators with their high standard of public speaking, level of research and interpretation of the topic.

“They made amazing arguments during their speeches and the audience was entertained by their talent as public speakers,” she said.

While all pupils spoke to impress, only one winner could be chosen.

Results of the competition:

• First place – Lurhan Maraba, Randfontein High School

• Second place – Beloved Sechele, Hoërskool Riebeeckrand

• Third place – Britney Golden, Hoërskool Jan Viljoen
