Mother nabbed for dumping baby – one of 347 arrested

A mother who abandoned her newborn baby shortly after giving birth was one of 347 arrested in just one week by West Rand Cluster Police.

The West Rand Cluster Police arrested 347 suspects in one week (starting from Monday, 26 September).

According to Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, four major incidents (two in Mogale City, one in Merafong and one in Fochville) resulting in seven arrests occurred in the cluster.

In Krugersdorp, a retailer in Key West Mall was robbed of sporting goods and shortly after the incident, two business robbers were arrested. In the second incident, two suspects aged 32 and 33 were arrested in Hekpoort for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

In Merafong, a man and woman were arrested in Carletonville for being in possession of counterfeit money. The suspects were found in possession of approximately R2 000 in banknotes.

Lastly, a mother was arrested shortly after giving birth for abandoning her newborn baby at the Greenpark landfill site in Fochville.

Other arrests were made for:

Serious crimes

• Robbery

• Murder

• Theft

• Assault

Less serious offences

• Illegal mining

• Contravention of the Liquor Act

• Crossing of railway lines

Brigadier Sipho Ngubane, acting West Rand Police Cluster Commander expressed his appreciation towards all members within the West Rand and said, “Your dedication and perseverance in apprehending suspects [is] impressive.

Everyone who effected an arrest in the past week is applauded. In the West Rand Cluster, we leave nothing to chance, we investigate properly and bring suspects to book.”
