According to Werner Vermaak, the ER24 spokesperson, paramedics arrived on scene at about 10pm and found the vehicle lying in the middle of the road.

“It appeared that the vehicle overturned several times, ejecting both the baby and one of the adult occupants,” he said.

Vermaak added that five adults were believed to be in the vehicle at the time of the incident. “There was nothing that paramedics could do for the baby and the other ejected occupant. Both of them were declared dead on the scene.”

The other occupants of the vehicle included two men and a woman who were found inside the vehicle after it had overturned. The survivors of the crash alleged that the driver left the scene prior to the arrival of emergency services.

Vermaak said the three passengers found in the vehicle after the incident sustained various injuries which ranged from scrapes and bruises to back and neck injuries.

He added that it is unclear whether the driver who allegedly left the scene had sustained any injuries. The surviving occupants were assessed on scene and were later transported to Carletonville Hospital for further care.

“The incident was handed over to the local police who attended the scene. An investigation will be conducted into the exact cause of the incident.”
