Youngster organises tourney to keep youth out of trouble

He is only in Grade 11 but has started a sporting tournament to keep the youth busy and out of trouble during the school holidays.

Thabiso Matlala, a Grade 11 pupil from AB Phokompe Secondary School in Mohlakeng has taken it upon himself to create a soccer tournament aimed at keeping the youth busy and out of trouble during the school holidays.

From Monday 3 to Friday 7 October the second Thabiso Matlala’s Five-a-side Tournament will take place at the Mohlakeng Tennis Courts.

My aim is to get children my age away from substance use. During school holidays children get bored and end up using substances. I want to prevent that,” Thabiso said.

During his first tournament Tshepo Ramokala, former Mamelodi Sundowns player assisted with the practice sessions and talent identification. For this tournament Oupa Manyisa, current Orlando Pirates captain will visit the teams to inspire and assist.

“The Thabiso Matlala’s Five-a-side Tournament will be held every school holiday from now on,” Thabiso concluded.

According to Thabiso, the winning team will receive R2 500 and the runners-up R1 000. Eleven teams are still needed to participate. The tournament will take place on the above dates from 12 noon to 6pm. There is an entrance fee.
