Police, CPF raid streets of R’fontein: eight arrested

Police and CPF raid the streets of Randfontein for dangerous weapons, drugs and more.

Local police recently teamed up with various CPF patrollers in an effort to make Randfontein’s streets safer after dark.

The main idea is to fight crime under the leadership of the Randfontein Police.

“We are different forums with one common goal – fighting crime. We cannot work in isolation regarding the safety of the community. We want to bring everyone together to see if this project will bear results.

“I think it’s beautiful, less police and more security, protecting the community,” said Constable Lucky Matome, Tarlton Police spokesperson.

Various crime hot spots identified by the police were visited to try and prevent street fighting, illegal gambling and common robberies. These crime hot spots include Randfontein CBD, the main taxi rank and the Greenhills Circle. The police and patrollers searched numerous people randomly.

“We want to encourage CPF patrollers and local police to work together and not separately. Fighting crime is a joint effort,” Brigadier Masole Manamela, Randfontein Police station commander said.

Arrests made during the operation include the following:

• Two for possession of dagga

• Two illegal immigrants

• Two for possession of dangerous weapons

• One for drunkenness

• One for possession of suspected stolen property

“We need to be visible so the community can see something is being done. We want to encourage the community to assist in the CPF patrols and to realise they can also help to make Randfontein a safer place.

“The community need to report people who act suspiciously,” said Zaheer Gangat, CPF Sector 5 chairperson.
