Fifty-one cents fuel increase on the cards

Experts predict a pricey October for motorists.

The recent decrease in the fuel price might prove to be short-lived as experts predict an increase on the cards.

The Automobile Association (AA) has released a statement in which they predict a fuel increase for October.

They say the current data on fuel shows the hike is likely to be around the end of September and is leaning towards a 51 cent increase for 93 and 95 octane petrol.

For diesel and illuminating paraffin, the prediction is a 24 cent increase.

The reason for the increase is believed to be the result of a controversy surrounding the Hawks’ investigation of Pravin Gordhan, Finance Minister of South Africa, which affected the rand’s standing against the US dollar.

The steep increase calls for fuel-saving measures in order for motorists to get more bang for their buck.

The South African Department of Energy has on issued tips on ways in which motorists can save on petrol in general.

To be more fuel efficient:

• Close car windows when driving to prevent ‘drag’ of the vehicle
• Use multi-grade oil as it reduces vehicle drag
• Service your vehicle regularly
• Do not drive with under-inflated tyres
• Switch to radial-ply tyres
• Avoid stop-start driving
• Accelerate slowly
• Do not speed
