Greener grass on the other side

Cultivating grass is not as simple as one would think.

Johan Hattingh, owner of Ayize Instant Lawn who also leases TLBs, tippers and lowbeds, described the greener grass one would find on the ‘other side’.

Johan discovered a gap in the market for grass approximately six years ago. Although it was established as a temporary business, it grew exponentially over the years.

“Growing grass is an extremely long process. It’s very time-consuming as you need to take in consideration the quality and quantity of your compost and top soil,” Johan said.

To get the best results, a perfect mixture of different fertilisers, manure and compost is sifted and spread over the grass. The sifting is done on a large scale for which huge machinery is used. The sifting process is not only crucial to promoting growth, but also to eliminate the odour of manure.

“The climate plays a big role in growing grass. Even though we are closed during the winter, we cover the grass with a special material to have it ready for summer when people usually buy grass,” he said.

When the grass is ready to be harvested, it is removed with a special machine. It is important not to cut the roots too deep as the roots are essential for the next harvest.

“While the grass is growing, it needs to be watered every single day. We use various methods to make it grow quicker and better, such as applying growth boosters, fertiliser and lawn dressing,” Johan concluded.

Johan recently acquired another farm in Tarlton to meet the community’s need for instant lawn.
