Landlady searching for deceased lodger’s family

A West Rand landlady is looking for the family of her deceased lodger, in order to bury him.

A single 63-year-old man recently passed away and his kind-hearted landlady is searching for his next of kin.

According to Jabulile Kunene-Myeni, Edwin Christopher Rhys Hawes passed away on Sunday, 11 September, leaving very little information about his next of kin.

Kunene-Myeni said Hawes had lived on her property in Roodepoort West from 2012, until he recently became ill. She believes his family lives in Westonaria, Rand West City.

She explained that she took him to hospital when he fell ill. While still in hospital he passed away, a week shy of his 64th birthday, which would have been on 18 September. Kunene-Myeni said there is little they can do with his body until his next of kin comes forward.

“We are urgently looking for them so he [Christopher] can rest in peace,” she said.

She added it has been a struggle trying to contact any of his family, as Christopher had lost his phone.

“All we found in his room was two telephone numbers, and we cannot reach these people,” she said.

Kunene-Myeni is urging anyone with any information about his next of kin to contact either her, on 084 606 5922, or her husband, Philani Myeni, on 074 533 5193.
