Bridge a ticking time-bomb

WARNING: Robinson bridge is crumbling, falling apart.

The bridge near Uncle Harry’s Roadhouse has once again come under the spotlight for the various dangers it poses.

Peter Dick, the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) councillor for Ward 9 brought the exposed side of the bridge to the attention of the Herald. The drop on the exposed side goes all the way down to the railroad tracks below.

Peter’s concern is that pedestrians use the bridge, and a gust of wind or a wrong step could be fatal.

In addition to the danger it poses to pedestrians, motorists are also greatly affected as the road lanes narrow significantly at the top of the bridge, making it difficult for large vehicles to pass. There is also a pothole at the top of the bridge that gets larger and larger as traffic drives over it.

Peter has called for the exposed side of the bridge to be closed, the pothole to be repaired, and an exploration of the larger cause of the degradation of the bridge.

“The bridge is crumbling. It’s falling apart. If this is what it looks like on the top, can you imagine what it looks like on the underside?” he said.

Peter concluded by saying that the situation needs urgent attention before anything serious happens.
