Water restrictions for entire Rand West City

Public notice: Water restrictions implemented for the entire Rand West City.

Rand West City Local Municipality, comprising Randfontein and Westonaria, is another area to join the water-restrictions club.

The restrictions announced by the municipality on Monday (12 September) are a response to low dam levels, an unseasonably warm spring and expected above-normal summer temperatures.

Tshidiso Tlharipe, spokesperson for the Executive Mayor said that in the Government Gazette of 12 August 2016, the Director General of the Department of Water and Sanitation indicated that 15 per cent water restrictions need to be implemented in the integrated Vaal River System area as a result of insufficient rainfall in the catchment area.

Rand Water, which supplies most of Rand West City’s water, gets its supply from the Vaal River System. It has set a goal of saving 15 per cent on water supply and encourages all its clients to help achieve this goal.

We appeal to communities to use water sparingly to reduce water consumption. We would like to use this opportunity to educate the community on preserving water as much as possible,” Tlharipe said.

The following are guidelines to reduce water consumption:

• Do not wash your vehicle using a hose pipe, rather use a bucket or take your vehicle to a car wash that recycles water.
• Do not water your garden between 5am and 8pm.
• Reduce your time in the shower and close the tap while brushing teeth.
• Identify and fix all water leaks in and around the house as soon as possible.
• Do not use a hosepipe to clean driveways.
• Use plants in your garden that require less water. Use recycled water in your garden.
• Replace your shower head with a water-saving fitting.
• Use rain tanks to capture water from your roof.
• Cover your swimming pool to reduce evaporation.
• Report all visible water leaks outside your property to the municipality.

“We really want to encourage the community to be aware of their water consumption and to reduce it as much as possible to prevent water becoming as scarce as in some of the other provinces,” Tlharipe concluded.
