Five arrested for stealing rice and sugar beans

Five suspects have been arrested in connection with 60 tons of stolen rice and sugar beans.

Five suspects aged between 25 and 42 were arrested during the weekend for being in possession of stolen goods.

The arrests took place at about 5pm on Sunday, 11 September, said Constable Lucky Matome, the Tarlton Police spokesperson.

It is alleged police followed up on information received from vigilant and concerned members of the Randfontein community. The task team that followed up on the information consisted of the Hijacking Task Team as well as the Sector Police.

The information led them to a farm in Vogelstruisfontein where they found two trucks with trailers, as well as 60 tons of rice and sugar beans.

Inside the trucks were 14 different number plates, one of which was allegedly used in Durban where stock was stolen. The rice and sugar beans were allegedly also stolen in Durban.

“The investigation is still continuing, and the possibility of more arrests cannot be ruled out,” Matome said.

The suspects who have already been apprehended are expected to make brief appearances in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court soon.

“Fighting crime is a collective effort,” said West Rand Police Cluster Commander, Major General Anna Mateisi. “This success is a very good example of a partnership that is working.”

Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein Police Station Commander, was also congratulated by the high-ranking Major for leading his team with dedication, and for his hard work.
