VIDEO: Police roadblock – arrests and fines aplenty

WATCH: A nasty surprise awaited traffic and other offenders

Members of the West Rand Cluster Police and beyond partnered with the Randfontein Traffic Police to keep motorists on their toes during a recent roadblock.

It was held on Randfontein Road (R41) between Randfontein and Azaadville on Tuesday, 6 September.

Members of various stations within Randfontein were out in numbers for yet another series of crime-prevention operations.

Police were on the look-out for illegal firearms, drugs, stolen property and illegal immigrants, among other. The Randfontein Traffic Police issued fines relating to motor vehicle safety of which more than a few went to taxi drivers for overloading and not having the correct permit to transport passengers.

According to Constable Lucky Matome, Tarlton Police spokesperson, it was a provincial operation and has moved from one area to another. It was not limited to roadblocks as members also visited illegal liquor hot spots in town as well as other locations prone to crime. Twenty three traffic fines were issued.

Matome mentioned that in addition to the R41, Toekomsrus and Mohlakeng was visited for a general crime clean-up.

The last operation of this nature the Herald reported on took place in early August during which police chased and arrested illegal immigrants and confiscated dangerous weapons.

Tuesday’s operation was not as high-octane as the last, which gave police a chance to check vehicles thoroughly and search the occupants without worrying that suspects would make a dash. Police searched 122 vehicles and 417 people.

Arrests made during the operation:

• Two for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm

• Three for theft

• Six for being in possession of dagga

• One illegal immigrant
