Traffic chief puts his foot down

Traffic Police to do something about the Homestead Avenue and Tambotie Road intersection after yet another vehicle accident.

The infamous Tambotie Road and Homestead Avenue intersection is under the spotlight following yet another collision, this time involving two vehicles.

The accident occurred last Friday (2 September). It is believed one of the vehicles travelling in the south-bound lane skipped the stop sign and collided with the other vehicle travelling in the west-bound lane, causing it to overturn. A young child was a passenger in the car that overturned.

Fortunately no-one was seriously injured but the victims were taken to hospital for further examination.

“That intersection is a problem definitely under our spotlight and we will continue policing it,” said Kenny Mampondo, Randfontein Traffic Chief.

He said many of these collisions are due to human error. It appears drivers do not adhere to the rules of the road, such as obeying the stop signs and observing their surroundings. The causes often range from texting/ using a phone while driving to driving under the influence.

Mampondo added the Randfontein Traffic Department is fully aware of this dangerous intersection and that a request has been made to the Rand West City Local Municipality for speed bumps. They subsequently engaged with the relevant departments to assist in reducing speed.

“We acknowledge that this intersection will be even busier once the mall has been completed, therefore we addressed the issue before the mall’s opening. We are also considering putting up traffic lights to ensure the safety of pedestrians as well,” Mampondo concluded.

According to Craig Harrison, DA ward councillor, the request for traffic lights at the Tambotie Road and Homestead Avenue intersection has been part of his IDP plan for the past five years.
