Man faces charges after lying to cops

'Giving false statements under oath is an offence'

A 26-year-old man has been arrested on charges of perjury after falsely reporting a housebreaking and theft at his home.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the suspect was arrested on 29 August in Spook Town, Bekkersdal.

She said the investigating officers were conducting their investigation into the housebreaking and theft case the suspect had reported when they discovered that he’d given a false statement, saying the incident had happened while he was at work.

“According to his statement, he left his home to go to work and when he returned, he found the house had been broken into,” Lefakane said.

The investigation that led to the suspect’s arrest was led by detective Constables Charles Maluleke and Busisiwe Sango. The suspect was charged with perjury and is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court this week.

“This must serve as an example that giving false statements under oath is an offence that is punishable by law,” said the Bekkersdal station commander, Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu.
