Alleged panga-weilding robber arrested

The suspect was arrested through fingerprint recognition.

A 28-year-old alleged panga-wielding suspect has been arrested for a Westonaria business robbery – nine months after the crime was committed.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, the incident occurred on 12 November, 2015.

Lefakane explained that the victim, who is a security officer, was at work when he was confronted by a group of suspects armed with pangas. They allegedly tied him and his colleague up with shoelaces and threatened them before stealing some construction tools and their cellphones. The suspects later fled on foot.

After a thorough investigation, led by detective Constables Thembinkosi Mapoloba and Tshepo Mashala, fingerprints lifted from the scene revealed one suspect’s identity. He was traced and arrested in his home shortly after.

He has been charged with business robbery and appeared in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on 1 September.
