Red sand ‘temporary’ pothole solution

Lazaar Avenue made safe temporarily.

Lazaar Avenue is one of the town’s worst potholed roads and it has recently been made temporarily safe.

The road is riddled with potholes which were filled with red sand to fill the gaping holes and spare motorists damage to their cars.

The unconventional method does make the road safer but DA Ward 3 Councillor, Alwyn van Tonder, said it is a temporary solution.

He said he has been asking the municipality to make the road safer which they did but he noted that it is most definitely not something that can be fixed with a band-aid solution.

“It’s great that they fixed it. It’s safer but it’s not the right way and I am still waiting for it to be repaired with tar,” Van Tonder said.

Van Tonder explained that the road is a shoo-in to be fixed as it meets the criteria of a priority road which are the roads the municipality said will be considered before any other roads.

The criteria as set by the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) states that the road must be a main road and it must frequently be used for public and commercial transport. Van Tonder said the road meets all requirements and should, therefore, be moved to the priority list.

“I would really just like to thank the roads and infrastructure department as well as the mayor for making the road safer to drive on,” Van Tonder said.
