20 years for Christmas Day killer

Man gets 20 years for the Christmas Day killing of an EFF member.

Justice has finally been served for the murdered EFF member, 33-year-old Monde Kwenyama, and his family.

Kwenyama died on Christmas Day, 2014 upon arrival at Emergency Services after being stabbed by 34-year-old Bobby Jack Hartney. According to Kwenyama’s sister-in-law, Raylene Martin, Kwenyama’s then 10-year-old son witnessed the ordeal.

Bobby’s trial was not a smooth one for the family. First the family, as well as other EFF members, complained after they were allegedly told the case docket had disappeared after the 8 January bail hearing.

After the court proceedings, they walked to the Randfontein Police Station, where they demanded answers. Police then directed them to the detectives’ offices in order to retrieve the docket. The docket was found – the reason for its disappearance was said to be an administrative fault.

After various court appearances and to the dismay of Kwenyama’s family, Hartney was then released on bail of R5 000 in March last year.

Finally, on 29 July this year, Hartney was sentenced for the murder of Kwenyama. He was found guilty on two charges, namely murder and common assault. For these crimes he was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.

Investigating officer, Warrant Officer Bongani Mpete was applauded for his investigative skills and the successful conclusion thereof.

“The Randfontein Police management team is proud to have a dedicated member like Warrant Officer Bongani Mpete on the team.

His vigilance and thorough investigating methods resulted in this successful conviction. We also wish to congratulate the members of the National Prosecuting Authority for the successful conclusion,” said Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Police station commander.

It seems the EFF Toekomsrus branch has been named after the late Kwenyama, as indicated by its Facebook page.
